Lyrics(English)
Wind sweeps o’er the mountains and rivers, the past stretching vast and gray, The moon descends upon the mortal world, a thousand years like frost laying its way. Drums and bells begin to chime, as wisps of cooking smoke gently rise, Time makes its silent entrance, beneath the watching skies.
A boat on the moonlit bay, upstream against the flowing tide, Seeking the source of all things, where the mist and shadows hide. Like Emperor Shun of old, offering prayers to the vault of heaven above, Incense smoke curls upward, drums and bells echoing in a song of love. You arrive in this place, without a word, in silent grace, Flowing with the world, growing with all things in this transient space.
You hold the flowing light, turning cycles into a perfect ring, Spring departs and autumn arrives, the seasons dancing on a tethered string. Joys and sorrows follow in turn, reunions and partings deeply entwined, Through a thousand twists and turns, returning to the origin we find. You write of a heart returning, a yearning that lasts through the span, You turn waiting into a promise, a reunion for every man.
Year after year, flowers bloom and fade away, Year after year, people leave and return to stay. Year after year, the moon waxes full and wanes in the light, Year after year, time passes, silent in its flight.
Iron horses are long gone, sandstorms fill the mountain pass, Music has scattered, wine grows cold in the banquet glass. Where are the heroes? What of the beauties, their grace and their face? All have entered the pages of history, fading like smoke, leaving no trace. Yesterday a youth, today the autumn of my years has come, New frost in the mirror, quietly marking the life I have run.
A thousand layers of wind and snow, covering earth and sky, A thousand joys and griefs, coming and going, none knowing why. A thousand deep affections, ending at last in parting and sorrow, A thousand dreams of ages past, paid to the years we cannot borrow. All contained within you, beyond our grasp to reach or to keep, In the quiet of the flow, secrets are buried deep.
Year after year, childhood dreams drift further from sight, Year after year, frost settles upon the face in the light. Year after year, the step begins to falter and slow, Year after year, life reaches its sunset, with nowhere else to go.
I wish for you to forget me, though I find it hard to let you go, Love etched into bone and blood, hatred piercing the soul so low. Longing for the strength to stand and face you in the fray, Standing in the passage of years, never dodging, never turning away.
Author’s Note(English)
The birth of The Ballad of Passing Years stems from my awe and emotional reflection upon that intangible entity—”Time.”
Throughout the creative process, I often pondered: what exactly is time to us? Is it the driving force that propels us forward, or a silent thief that steals away our youth? It is as solemn and distant as the ancient rites of Shun, yet as fleeting as chimney smoke dispersing across the mountains and rivers.
In weaving these lyrics, I sought to capture a sense of contradiction—of being both “in the world” and “apart from the world.” From the opening line, “The moon shines upon the human world, a thousand years like frost,” to the closing expression of helplessness and eventual release in the face of fleeting years, I hope this work is not merely a chronicle of one person’s growth, but a portrayal of the regret and tenderness we all feel when facing the torrent of time—the longing to hold on, and the necessity of letting go.
In the lyrics, the lines “Yesterday a youth, today the autumn of my years” perhaps reflect the true reality we all face as we step into different stages of life. We have had dreams of iron horses and golden armor, and we have experienced love etched into our bones; yet in the end, they all transform into the frost in the mirror and the dusty history books on the desk. However, even knowing this final outcome, we still choose to “let love enter our blood and bones, let hate reach the core of our souls,” standing amidst the flowing years, neither dodging nor retreating.
This song is dedicated to every soul that wanders, waits, and forgets within the passage of time, yet always preserves a sincere heart. May this melody and these words become a place where you can shelter your memories during those quiet, late-night hours.
