Lyrics(English)
Studious youth of talent rare, A hero born of heaven’s care. The spring breeze holds its silent breath, As endless years move toward their death.
Seeking truth in scrolls of old, With soaring spirit, brave and bold. A heart of loyalty, pure and deep, To serve the land and vows to keep.
The howling wind stands by my side, The sparks of hope have not yet died. With youthful dreams of vast design, The mountains and rivers, the goal is thine.
The sudden storms of fate arise, Torrents falling from the skies. With burning blood and courage true, Crying for the folk, I call to you.
The world is turned, the earth is shaken, By turmoil and by strife forsaken. I face my fate, a righteous vow, With no concern for here and now
Parents age in fading light, A world apart, removed from sight. They miss their son, who stays away, The empty nest, where he doesn’t stay.
The quiet yard is void of sound, The fading lamp casts shadows round. With no grave to mark the final rest, The snow and wind fulfill the quest.
The hero’s gone, the distance wide, The mountains moan, the rivers sighed. With all my blood, with all my fire, Into the barren waves I retire.
The hero’s gone, the path is lost, Across the snow, at bitter cost. Only the wind and winter’s rain, Weep for me in silent pain.
The spring breeze returns, as it did of old, But the soul is gone, the heart is cold. Heaven and earth are hushed in prayer, And long, long grief fills the years I bear.
Author’s Note(English)
The creation of Lament for the Hero was an act of carving a memorial out of grief. In the face of a life cut short and a grand ambition left unfulfilled, words often feel fragile. Yet, I found it necessary to let the music carry the weight of what could not be said.
In this piece, “Heavenly Pride” (天驕) is not merely a title; it represents the brilliant, burning spirit of youth—a soul who, like the rising stars or the first spark of a revolution, dares to challenge the encroaching darkness. The lyrics contrast the grandeur of one’s aspirations—to serve the nation and protect the people—with the stark, lonely reality of the aftermath: a quiet courtyard, a fading lamp, and a grave that cannot be visited.
The transition from the “burning blood” (腔腔熱血) of a youthful patriot to the “barren waves” (荒濤) that swallow his memory is a meditation on the cost of sacrifice. We see a hero who, despite knowing the path might not lead back home, chooses to step into the wind and snow regardless. The repeated refrain—that the hero is gone, and only the wind remains to weep—is meant to evoke that lingering ache we feel for those who left us too soon, whose footsteps have been buried by time, but whose spirits continue to echo in the mountains.
I hope this song serves as a vessel for remembrance—a way to honor not just the tragedy of a lost life, but the undying resolve of a heart that dared to love its people more than its own existence.
