Lyrics(English)
You Walk Toward the Vast Sea
Lyrics by Taihua | Produced by Suno (Adapted from Taihua’s poem “In Memory of Haizi”)
[Verse 1] Spring snow drifts outside the window, Shattering the silence of the night. Rainwater runs along the eaves, Dropping into the world, sound by sound.
Someone in the distance is reading aloud, Your name carried back by the breeze. That phrase, “facing the sea,” Suddenly leaves my heart intoxicated.
[Verse 2] It was in a late-coming moment That I finally met you. Though we are the same age, We are separated by the distance of fate.
You wrote countless lines of verse, Like waves surging toward the horizon, While I remain here in the mortal world, Learning how to breathe.
[Chorus] You walk toward the vast sea, Leaving spring behind in the human world. Turning flames into poetic lines, Burning away the lonely hours.
You are too far from the crowd, Yet too close to the truth. When the world had not yet awakened, You had already returned to the boundless void.
[Verse 3] If you were still in this mortal world, Would you, too, be ordinary? With a single lamp and a single table, Writing poems until the dead of night.
Perhaps one dusk, We might pass by in the crowd, Speaking of distant wheat fields, And a future left unfinished.
[Bridge] The wind is still blowing, The snow falls without a sound. Someone remembers you, Born in the spring.
[Chorus] You walk toward the vast sea, Leaving spring behind in the human world. Turning flames into poetic lines, Burning away the lonely hours.
You are too far from the crowd, Yet too close to the truth. When the world had not yet awakened, You had already returned to the boundless void.
[Outro] Facing the sea, The wind is still blowing, Spring flowers are in bloom, You walk toward the vast sea.
Author’s Note(English)
A Message to a Peer Across Time
The birth of these lyrics stems from a resonance that transcends time and space.
Many years ago, I heard that name for the first time. It was a name that belonged to poetry and to the distance. In that unique era, his verses streaked across the silent night like lightning, exhausting the turbulence and magnificence of life. As a peer of the same age, rereading his words feels like hearing the most authentic breath and struggle of that generation.
海子‘s poetry possess a power that reaches straight into the heart—a thirst for life and a fearless pursuit of truth. Yet, whenever I read of his end, I cannot help but feel a deep sense of regret. I know that he, too, wandered before that door called “faith”; he read the Bible, but in the end, he did not choose to take the hand of Jesus at that moment. He walked too deep and too far on the path of seeking truth, only to depart this world in solitude.
As his peer, I offer this work as a tribute. It is more than just a memorial for a departed soul; it is a whisper to those who come after. Through these lyrics, I have attempted to re-examine life from the perspective of one of his own generation—in the process of pursuing poetry and truth, how are we to anchor the heavy weight of our own existence?
These lyrics are adapted from an essay I wrote with the same title. It is my hope to convey that “living toward death” clarity, along with reflections on the value of life, to each of you who are here in this mortal world, practicing how to breathe.
