Reunion and Resonance: On “The Ocean”

“With nothing to do and nothing to say, I came to the ocean.”

Initially, my perception of the ocean perhaps lingered only on its physical vastness. Yet, the tremors of the soul from my very first encounter with the sea remain indelible. I am often reminded of the exclamations in Pushkin’s To the Sea—a profound pursuit of the soul’s ultimate sanctuary. I, too, am constantly exploring: Is the ocean the starting point of life, or is it our final shore?

I once wrote a poem titled To the Sea, documenting that fleeting, awe-inspiring glimpse. This song is the extension and reconstruction of that poem, born from the evolution of my state of mind.

Today, I have moved to the seaside. Living alongside the sound of the waves from dawn till dusk, the “physical phenomenon” of the ocean has shed its mysterious filter in my eyes, becoming ever more concrete and profound. The romance of the ocean is a lover belonging to us all; it holds a fatal allure—once you draw near, you are deeply drawn in, unable to forget. At the same time, it is like a kin: possessing both the gentle caress and broad embrace of a mother, and the profound gaze and mighty strength of a father, both unquestionable.

More importantly, I have realized that the waves of the ocean are constantly surging within our own lives, rising and falling like the tides. We are in a state of constant reunion within these tides of life; we cannot live apart from the ocean, for it is both the cradle of life and the final harbor for the soul.

Here, I have learned to find my own rhythm within its breath. The ocean is a mirror, reflecting the vast dimensions of life. Its nature—”half gentle, half surging”—is exactly like the life force deep within each of us: both yearning for peace and unable to suppress the urge to surge forth.

This song is a deep dialogue between the ocean and me, as well as a revisiting of that original, soul-shaking tremor. It records my journey from “knowing” the ocean to “deeply understanding” it, and carries my realizations about the power of life. I hope this melody transcends the senses and resonates with the ocean that lies within your own heart—both gentle and surging.
