Every child begins with open eyes
Waiting for the seeds of truth to rise
You taught us how to welcome morning light
And how to stand through every stormy night
After all these years, I see it still
That summer morning back in nineteen eighty
At six, I walked into your office
By lamplight, you corrected our essays
That light fell softly on your face
And on the dreams that time could not erase
In the hopeful words our young hands wrote
You saw the roads that we had yet to take
Your years as keeper of the farm tools were over
You stood before your class once more
The large bare bulb burned harsh and hot
You worked in silence, page by page
You wore a simple, faded jacket
Even a wristwatch was beyond your reach
Yet your eyes still shone with steady light
Your gentle voice remains with me today
Years went by; we weathered wind and rain
We became teachers; we became parents too
Only then we understood your faithful care
Had lit the road before us all along
On Teachers’ Day, that lamplight comes to mind
And there you are, still seated in its glow
Though passing years have turned your hair to silver
The light you gave still shines within us now
May all who light the way find joy and peace

《想起那盏灯》改编自我写于2016年的诗作《教师节的遐思》。这首歌所写的，不是一个虚构的故事，而是我对一位高中老师的真实记忆。
一九八〇年盛夏的一天，清晨六点，我走进老师的办公室。硕大的灯泡刺眼而灼热，他正伏在灯下，认真批改我们的作文。此前，他因时代的原因离开讲台，在下放劳动期间担任农具保管员；改革开放后，他才重新回到学校工作。
那时，他穿着一件褪色的涤卡上衣，生活清贫，连拥有一块手表都是奢望。然而，他的目光依然明亮，声音依然亲切。在我们准备高考的日子里，他用自己的学识、热情和行动，守护着一群年轻人的梦想。
多年以后，当我们也走过人生的风雨，有些人成为教师，有些人成为父母，才渐渐懂得：那盏灯照亮的，不只是桌上的一篇篇作文，也照亮了我们尚未抵达的远方。
谨以《想起那盏灯》，献给我的高中老师，也献给所有曾经为学生照亮前路的人。
Author’s Note(English)
The Light I Still Remember grew out of my 2016 poem, Reflections on Teachers’ Day. It is not a fictional story, but a true memory of one of my high school teachers.
At six o’clock on a summer morning in 1980, I walked into his office. Beneath a large bulb whose light was both glaring and intensely hot, he was bent over our essays, carefully reading and correcting them. During an earlier period of political upheaval, he had been removed from teaching and sent away to perform manual labor, where he was assigned to work as the custodian of farm tools. With the beginning of China’s reform era, he was finally able to return to his school.
He wore a faded polyester-twill jacket and lived so modestly that even owning a wristwatch seemed beyond his reach. Yet his eyes remained bright, and his voice was as warm and gentle as ever. As we prepared for the national college entrance examination, he guarded the dreams of a group of young students through his knowledge, devotion, and example.
Only many years later, after we had weathered life’s storms—and some of us had become teachers and parents ourselves—did we fully understand: that lamp illuminated far more than the essays spread across his desk. It also illuminated the distant roads we had yet to travel.
I dedicate The Light I Still Remember to my high school teacher, and to every teacher who has ever lit the way for a student.
